How to play Omitsy

Omitsy is a daily word game for two. You and your buddy work together: each of you clues your own secret word and guesses the other's, without ever saying a word on the omit list. There are three puzzles every day, each with three levels, and you play each puzzle with a different buddy.

  1. 1You each get a secret word

Only you can see yours. Your buddy has a different one, and the two have nothing to do with each other.

  2. 2Take turns: guess, then clue

On your turn, guess your buddy's word from their clues so far (wrong guesses are free), then give one word to help them guess yours. Don't worry about the exact form of a guess: COERCE counts for COERCION, PUPPIES for PUPPY.

  3. 3Omit the obvious

Each word has a hidden omit list that nobody can see, usually the obvious clues. For PIZZA it might be cheese, slice, Italy. Say one and the level ends for you both, though each level gives you one take-back.

Tip: the first clue you think of is probably on the list. Think sideways: "crunchy" for APPLE is safer than "fruit".

  4. 4Name both words to clear the level

Clear the level by the pin (par) and a harder level unlocks, with a longer omit list (about 5, 10 and 20 words). Four turns past par the level is picked up and scored +4, like golf; only an omitted word or giving up scores a cross. The whole day is scored against par, so results compare across friends at a glance, and your streak with each buddy grows every day you play.

Who can play

Anyone, free, in a web browser or the Omitsy app, from age 13. Give your first clue and send your buddy the invite link; they can join from any phone or computer without an account. No buddy handy? Get matched with another player: you each see a nickname, not a name.
